He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1903-1904 and was Commissioner of Public Works from 1904 until 1905. During the Conscription Crisis of 1917 he supported the government of Sir Robert Borden and crossed the floor to run in the 1917 federal election as a Liberal-Unionist in support of Borden's new Union government defeating Laurier-Liberal candidate John Alexander Wallace.

Brian Albert Charlton: is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1995, and was a cabinet minister in the government of Bob Rae. Charlton first ran for the Ontario legislature in the provincial election of 1975, but lost to Progressive Conservative John Smith by 1,667 votes in Hamilton Mountain. He ran again in the 1977 provincial election, and defeated Smith by 373 votes. He was re-elected over Progressive Conservative Duncan Beattie in the 1981 provincial election by 197 votes, despite the fact that the NDP lost several seats elsewhere in the province. He was re-elected by a greater margin in the 1985 provincial election, and defeated Liberal Jane Milanetti by 1,632 votes in the 1987 election. Charlton supported Bob Rae for the provincial NDP leadership in 1982.

John M. Charlton: was a Canadian Member of Parliament and businessman. Charlton was the Member of Parliament for Norfolk North, Ontario for 32 years until 1904. He was the author of "Parliamentary Recollections" and contributed to the North American Review. Charlton was first elected to the House of Commons in 1871, as member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He had strong religious views and high ideals, was a strong advocate for provincial rights, and worked for years for passage of a law affording protection to women and girls under a certain age. His speeches were considered blunt and brusque compared to his contemporaries. After a tour of the United States in 1897, Charlton served on the Joint High Commission between Great Britain, Canada and the United States from 1898 to 1899. His wife, Ella Gray, died in 1905, and Charlton entered a marriage with Cora J. Given in 1907. He died of a stroke at his home in Lynedoch in 1910.

John Alpheus Charlton: was a Progressive Conservative party member of the Canadian House of Commons. He was born in Brantford, Ontario and became a farmer and veterinarian by career. He was first elected at the Brant riding in the 1945 general election and served five consecutive terms from the 20th to the 24th Canadian Parliaments. During that time, his riding changed to Brant—Wentworth then Brant—Haldimand. Charlton was defeated in the 1962 federal election by Lawrence Pennell of the Liberal party. During his terms in the House of Commons, he served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture (1957–1958). He was also Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (1959–1961) and to the Minister of Agriculture (1962).
