Arthur Aikin: English chemist, mineralogist and scientific writer, was born in Warrington, Lancashire.He studied chemistry under Joseph Priestley at Warrington Academy, and gave attention to the practical applications of the science.He was one of the founders of the Geological Society of London in 1807 and was its honorary secretary in 1812-1817. He contributed papers on the Wrekin and the Shropshire coalfield, among others, to the transactions of that society.Later he became secretary of the Royal Society of Arts, and in 1841 treasurer of the Chemical Society. In early life he had been a Unitarian minister for a short time. He was highly esteemed as a man of sound judgment and wide knowledge. He died in London.

Sir James Albert Manning Aikins: was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was the leader of the Manitoba Conservative Party in the provincial election of 1915, and later served as the province's ninth Lieutenant Governor. In the 1911 federal election, Aikins was elected as a Conservative candidate to the Canadian House of Commons, for the riding of Brandon. The Conservative Party won this election, and Aikins served as a backbench supporter of Robert Borden's administration. Aikins left federal politics in 1915, amid unexpected circumstances. The provincial Conservative government of Rodmond P. Roblin was forced to resign amid scandal in May 1915. Aikins served as chair of the provincial party's convention in July, and accepted the position of party leader on July 15 when no other candidates came forward. He resigned his federal seat, and led the provincial party into a new election.

James Cox Aikins: was a prominent Canadian politician in the 19th century. He twice served as a cabinet minister in the government of Sir John A. Macdonald, and was the fourth Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba from 1882 to 1888.The Clear Grit faction in parliament had previously been aligned with Francis Hincks's governing Reformers, but this alliance ended after the 1854 election. Most of Hincks's supporters subsequently formed a new alliance with the Conservatives, while the Clear Grits formed a "left opposition" and attempted to reconstruct the Reform Party on their terms. Aikins was a minor figure in the Grit parliamentary ranks for the next three years but was nevertheless re-elected in 1857, with 2007 votes against 915 for his Conservative opponent. The Conservative-led alliance remained in power during these years, and Aikins remained in opposition.
