Ira Levin: was an American novelist, playwright, and songwriter.Levin's first produced play was No Time for Sergeants (adapted from Mac Hyman's novel), a comedy about a hillbilly drafted into the United States Air Force that launched the career of Andy Griffith. Ira Sprague Bowen: was an American astronomer. A graduate of Oberlin College and the California Institute of Technology, he taught physics at Caltech from 1921 to 1945. He served as director of both the Mount Wilson Observatory and the Palomar Observatory, holding the latter position until 1964.In 1927 he discovered that Nebulium was not really a chemical element but instead doubly ionized oxygen.

Ira Remsen: was a chemist who, along with Constantin Fahlberg discovered the artificial sweetener saccharin. He was the second president of Johns Hopkins University.Remsen was born in New York City and earned an MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1867 to please his parents. He then traveled to Germany to study chemistry - his true passion. He earned a PhD from University of Göttingen in 1870. In 1875, after researching pure chemistry at University of Tübingen, Remsen returned to the United States and became a professor at Williams College, where he wrote the popular "Theoretical Chemistry". His book and reputation brought him to the attention of Daniel Coit Gilman who invited him to become one of the original faculty of Johns Hopkins University. He accepted and founded the department of chemistry there, where he ran his own laboratory. In 1879 he founded the American Chemical Journal which he edited for 35 years.
