Carl Howard Valentine: a former professional soccer player and coach who has had a long association with soccer in the Vancouver area (British Columbia, Canada). Valentine had a long, successful playing career from the late 1970s to the late 1990s with several clubs, notably the Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American Soccer League, Oldham Athletic, West Bromwich Albion of the Football League, and the Vancouver 86ers of the Canadian Soccer League and later American Professional Soccer League. Valentine earned won 31 caps as a Canadian international, including three in the country's first round ties at the 1986 World Cup finals.

Carl Eugene Heiles: an American astrophysicist noted for his contribution to the understanding of diffuse interstellar matter through observational radio astronomy.Much of Heiles' work has been in studying the diffuse gas in the interstellar medium, primarily through observation of the hydrogen line. His role in this field was such that a conference at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico on diffuse matter was held in honor of Heiles' 65th birthday.[2] Observations of this gas has helped develop a better understanding of star formation and galactic gravitational and magnetic fields.

Carl Keenan Seyfert: was an American astronomer.He is best known for his 1943 research paper on high-excitation line emission from the centers of some spiral galaxies, which are named Seyfert galaxies after him. Seyfert's Sextet, a group of galaxies, is also named after him.In 1936 he joined the staff of the new McDonald Observatory in Texas, where he helped get the observatory started. He stayed until 1940, working with Daniel M. Popper on the properties of faint B stars and continuing his work on colors in spiral galaxies.In 1940 he went to Mt. Wilson Observatory as a fellow with the National Research Council. He stayed until 1942, studying a class of active galaxies now called Seyfert galaxies. In 1942 he returned to Cleveland, at the Case Institute, where he taught navigation to military personnel and participated in secret military research. He also carried out some astronomical research at the Warner and Swasey Observatory of the Case Institute.

Carl Alvar Wirtanen: was an American astronomer who worked at Lick Observatory.He discovered periodic comet 46P/Wirtanen, as well as eight asteroids, including notably the Apollo asteroid (29075) 1950 DA, which may have a non-negligible probability of impacting the earth in the year 2880. He also discovered two other Apollo asteroids: 1685 Toro and 1863 Antinous.

He is famous for defining the Archaea (a new domain or kingdom of life) in 1977 by phylogenetic taxonomy of 16S ribosomal RNA, a technique pioneered by Woese and which is now standard practice.[1][2][3] He was also the originator of the RNA world hypothesis in 1967, although not by that name. He currently holds the Stanley O. Ikenberry Chair and is Professor of Microbiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
