Cohen was born in Montreal, Canada, and educated at Beverly Hills High School as well as Robert Land Academy in Ontario, Canada.After high school, Cohen left Los Angeles for Israel, working on a kibbutz before enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces. After a grueling tryout process known as a “gibush,” Cohen was one of the few non-Sabra volunteers accepted into the elite ranks of the Israeli Special Forces. He played 21 seasons with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves in the National League, and his last two years (1975-1976) with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. His most notable achievement was setting the MLB record for most career home runs with 755, which he held for 33 years until being surpassed by San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds on August 7, 2007.
