Ernest Glanville: was a South African author, known especially for his short stories which are widely read and taught in South Africa.Glanville was educated in Grahamstown at St. Andrew's College (Grahamstown, South Africa) from January 1869 to May 1871. His schooling was interrupted when he and his father transported the first printing press from Grahamstown to Griqualand West by ox wagon in 1870 and began publishing a newspaper in Kimberley. In addition to his literary works, he worked in journalism for the Cape Argus and other newspapers, and collaborated with Dr MacGowan on the 1905 Jubilee Hymn. He was married to Emma Priscilla Powell, with whom he had two children -- Thomas and Ada.

Ernest George Jansen: was the second-last Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, holding office from 1950 to 1959.In 1919, he was a member of a delegation which tried unsuccessfully to persuade American president Woodrow Wilson to call for independence to be restored to the former Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal.In Parliament, Jansen was Speaker of the House of Assembly from 1924 to 1929, Minister of Native Affairs and of Irrigation from 1929 to 1934, and Speaker again from 1934 to 1943. He was highly regarded for his firm and impartial speakership.

Johann August Ernesti: was a German Rationalist theologian and philologist. In the following year he accepted the office of conrector in the Thomas school of Leipzig, of which Johann Matthias Gesner was then rector, an office to which Ernesti succeeded in 1734. He was, in 1742, named professor extraordinarius of ancient literature in the university of Leipzig, and in 1756 professor ordinarius of rhetoric. In the same year he received the degree of doctor of theology, and in 1759 was appointed professor ordinarius in the faculty of theology.
