St Brigid or Bridget of Kildare was a 5th century saint, who formed the monastery at Kildare. St Bridget or Birgitta of Sweden was a 14th century Swedish princess. She made various pilgrimages to Compostela, Palestine and Rome, and built a monastery for nuns later known as the Bridgettines.

Bridget and it's nickname Biddy were so frequently used on Irish women, that Biddy become a nickname for any Irish girl.
